Teeth naturally darken as we age. Over time, staining may be caused by exposure to coffee, tea, soda, tobacco and certain foods. Discoloration can also occur because of certain childhood illnesses, medications, physical trauma, etc.
Dr. Thurman offers the patented Opalescence® Tooth Whitening System. The Opalescence® Tooth Whitening System will remove discolorations with a gentle sustained release action that will oxidize (bleach) stains within your teeth. Your tooth structure remains unchanged. History and research show that most patients treated experienced some level of tooth whitening. Porcelain restorations and white fillings do not whiten with bleaching agents.
Ultradent’s Opalescence Xtra Boost is a revolutionary new concept for “in-office bleaching.” Opalescence Xtra Boost is a 38% viscous, hydrogen peroxide “power” bleaching gel designed for rapid in-office tooth whitening.
Opalescence Xtra Boost is chemically activated; no “curing lights” are required to achieve quick whitening results. This unique in-office system can work for any lifestyle or busy schedule. The procedure takes approximately 1 hour, so the patient can whiten their teeth during a lunch break, before or after work. It’s that convenient.
Opalescence Xtra Boost offers ease of preparation with our “syringe-to-syringe” mixing system, ensuring fresh gel for each application.
Research and experience show that the whitening effect from the Opalescence® treatment usually lasts for years. Teeth may darken faster if exposed again to staining products such as tobacco, coffee or juices. However, the teeth will probably remain significantly lighter than if no treatment had been done. Dr. Thurman may recommend toothpaste such as the Opalescence® Whitening Toothpaste to help minimize the formation of external stains on your teeth. Depending on your teeth and type of staining, results will vary. Dr. Thurman can explain the type of results you can expect from the treatment. Some patients experience increased tooth sensitivity to cold while using bleaching products. This will disappear in one to three days after interruption or completion of the treatment. To help with sensitivity, Dr. Thurman may prescribe a desensitizing gel, such as Ultradent's UltraEZ™ or a fluoride gel, such as Flor-Opal®.
Dr. Thurman also offers a convenient Opalescence® take-home bleaching kit.
Dr. Thurman will examine your teeth and gums to ensure good oral health. Old fillings may need to be replaced and/or decayed areas treated and filled. An impression of your teeth will be taken to guarantee proper fit of the custom fabricated bleaching trays. The thin, soft plastic trays provide sufficient comfort while bleaching. Once the tray is made, your dentist will explain how to use Opalescence® bleaching gel. Most patients use Opalescence® while they sleep. Dr. Thurman will decide how many nights your treatment should take for maximum results. Most patients will need to bleach for only three to eight nights. In some cases, Dr. Thurman may recommend bleaching during waking hours instead and possibly for shorter time periods.
An exam and diagnosis should always be performed prior to whitening your teeth. It’s important for you to be educated about the whitening process.
Dental restorations, such as crowns, fillings, etc. will not bleach. Whitening without dentist monitoring can cause a mismatch and may result in the need for expensive restoration replacement. Ideally, whitening should be performed prior to other esthetic dental procedures. Your dentist will then match your new restoration to your lighter shade.
Also, teeth with defective restorations or decay should be addressed prior to whitening. Whitening agents on an unhealthy tooth can lead to severe discomfort. Whitening may cause sensitivity especially for patients who already have sensitive teeth. We can monitor and provide the appropriate treatment should this occur.
Whitening your teeth is irreversible. When hair is bleached, it can easily be dyed or at least grow out to the original color within a few months. This is not the case with teeth.
