The FBI reports that a burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 15.4 seconds. Of the unsuccessful attempts, approximately 75% were deterred due to the loud sound of an alarm system.
Most occur when people are away at work or school and often due to correctable mistakes. The easiest way to make your residence more secure is to make it more difficult to enter. This usually involves locking doors, windows and cars even when in your garage. If your exterior doors only have simple locks, have deadbolts installed.
A sliding glass door can add light to your home but without a secondary blocking device can become an easy way for an intruder to get inside. This is also a good place to display highly visible alarm decals, neighborhood watch stickers or beware of dog signs.
Get to know your neighbors. Ask them to report suspicious activity or pick up your mail and newspapers if you are away.
Use easy to install light timers inside your home and have exterior lights installed that give you a 100 feet visibility. Combined with motion sensors, any movement will light up your house making it a less desirable target for burglars.
Identify your valuables by engraving them with your driver’s license number and record serial numbers. Photograph the various rooms of your house to show where items should go to make it easy to identify if something is missing. Store these records in a safe deposit box or with a relative in a fireproof safe.
An alarm system can be an effective deterrent as statistics show. Combined with a monitoring service, an alarm system can become a valuable lifeline. Make sure you set the alarm before you go out. Hire a professional security expert to make a tour of your house or business and design a full security plan.
