What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the science of locating spinal misalignments, called subluxations, and correcting the alignment of the spine. The spinal corrections, or adjustments, help allow the body to express its natural inherent healing power to help recover from an injury or fight off disease, by removing nerve interference caused by the misaligned vertebra.
How is a subluxation corrected?
A subluxation can only be corrected by a Doctor of Chiropractic. A chiropractor locates a subluxation using physical tests and sometimes x-ray findings. Once located, a subluxation is corrected by introducing a specific force to that vertebra which is subluxated and helping it gain its proper position.
When will I get better?
Each patient responds differently to chiropractic care. Many factors must be weighed when determining the progress of one's care. Whether the subluxation was caused by a new injury or whether it has been there for many years can change the treatment dramatically. But in any case there is a strong likelihood that chiropractic will not only help your aches and pains, but also will improve your overall health as well.
Is chiropractic safe?
Chiropractic has been found to be remarkably safe. Chiropractic is a conservative approach to healthcare. Because there are no drugs or surgery involved with chiropractic, it is a safe, natural way to help you reach 100% health. Chiropractors are highly skilled and highly educated individuals who have the knowledge and confidence to deliver this natural healing to you.
What can I do to help?
As a patient, the best thing you can do is help your body remain subluxation-free. How, you say? Well, a subluxation is the result of stress and not just the stress you might get from your job or because your car broke down. There are many different types of stress. There is physical stress. This is when you get injured. Whether you fall or are in a car accident, or just sleep in an awkward position one night, some force outside of your body has caused stress.
Will I need x-rays?
X-rays allow a chiropractor to get a detailed view of your spinal structures. Generally, new patients are x-rayed in order to rule out any non-chiropractic injuries, such as fractures, which may need to be referred to another doctor. Exposure to x-rays are, however, kept to a minimum and are only done when seen necessary by the chiropractor.
Can chiropractic help the pain in my hands, arms, legs, or feet?
Because the nervous system controls everything that happens in your body, it is possible that pain or discomfort in areas away from your spine could be related to a subluxation. When there is pressure on a nerve at a given point, it is possible that every tissue that nerve goes to could be affected. It is also not uncommon to see the symptoms of other bodily disorders diminish after the subluxation has been corrected. Sometimes a direct adjustment to the elbow, shoulder, knee, or any extremity is needed to help speed the healing process at that point.
Is it O.K. for me to get adjusted while I am pregnant?
Chiropractic can be extremely helpful during pregnancy. A woman's body goes through so many changes at this time which cause laxity in ligaments and shifting of weight-bearing structures which could lead to low back pain. Not only do chiropractic adjustments help any low back discomfort, but also many chiropractic patients report that their deliveries are faster and more comfortable.
