What will we do? The program will provide project based learning activities (academic tutoring, mentoring and computer based learning and the availability of a learning facility and equipment) for students. F Implement a dual tract system that involves middle and high school youth F Provide life skills training F Present a business phase supported by small business owners Who will be targeted? Participants are youth in the Augusta, Georgia area. Participants are principally recruited from: F L.C. Laney , T.W. Josey and the Academy of Richmond County High Schools F Murphy and Tubman Middle Schools Other participants may be recruited by community leaders, civic organizations and/or churches. Participants are selected based on: F Attitude F Academic needs F Socio-economic risk of the communities F Recommendation of school personnel F A desire to succeed in higher academics or the business world. Why is this project needed? The mission is to provide options and directions to middle and high school underserved youth. The program is dedicated to: F Instill ability and socio-economic opportunity to cause positive changes in communities F Increase the academic level in schools F Increase positive peer influence as students Expected outcomes include:
F Providing positive activities during the “Critical Time” after school and the summer F Instilling academic and community pride F Providing exposure to colleges/universities, trade schools, small businesses and role models Where will project/program operate? The majority of the project will be facilitated at the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center. Learning activities will take place at: F Colleges/Universities/Trade Schools F Small Businesses F Correctional facilities The entrepuneurial phase will be provided with the support of small businesses owner. Hour & Days of operation? F 9:00AM –2:00PM, Monday through Thursday F Academic/awareness/intervention trips may be held on Fridays or Saturdays F Learning sessions will typically occur on Tuesday and Thursdays 4:00AM –5:30PM. When will project/program start? The initial start date is slated for June 2007 and will continue on an annual basis.
