Treatment
There are three general phases of care in chiropractic treatment. These phases are designed to diagnose, treat and overcome pain and discomfort by preventative maintenance.
- Relief Care
- This phase consists of simple physical therapy modalities. Treatment such as ice and electric muscle stimulation are used. During this step one should begin to feel relief from pain and discomfort. Visits tend to be two to four times per week for one to four weeks.
- Corrective Care
- As the name suggests this step is used to correct the pain by focusing on your discomfort/symptoms. Common therapies used are ultrasounds, rehabilitative exercises and joint manipulation. Treatment is assessed from one to three times a week for two to eight weeks during the corrective care step. This is the longest and most thorough part of the process.
- Maintenance Care
- Now that you have experienced relief and your body is returning to a healthy state, you need to concentrate on maintaining your health. Periodic visits, as little as one visit every one to two months, are enough to screen for any minor conditions that could progress to greater problems. This is an important step that if followed properly can keep you healthy and save you money.
The therapeutic modalities performed during the three general steps to chiropractic care are described in more detail below.
- • Ultrasound
- By emitting high-frequency sound waves this treatment can help to break up tough tissues that build up within the body.
- • Electric Muscle Stimulation
- A stimulation that helps to relax a muscle that is in spasm or constant contraction helps to strengthen muscles.
- • Traction Therapy
- Facilitates joint alignment that allows joint fluid to flow properly in order to heal damaged cartilage.
- • Superficial Heat Therapy
- Exposes damaged areas to nutrients by increasing blood flow.
- • Cryotherapy(ice)
- Assists in decreasing pain and swelling.
- • Diapulse
- Facilitates tissue healing by increasing circulation and blood flow.
- • Exercise Therapy
- Specific exercises assigned to target specific body areas.
- • Radiographic Imaging
- A procedure that facilitates the doctor's ability to diagnose complications.
- • Spinal Decompression
- A new alternative to surgery and medication. It is clinically proven to be an effective treatment for degenerating, bulging or herniated discs.
