Many factors influence the life of a cut flower, and how long it will last in a vase of water, or in a piece of floral foam. Some blooms naturally last longer than others. To extend the life of most cut flowers, it is best to make certain that the arrangement or container has adequate amounts of fresh water. Also, it is important to change the water in floral arrangement on a daily basis. Water left sitting in an arrangement or vase at room temperature begins to develop certain types of bacteria that will cut short the life of the flower, so remove the existing water in the container, and replace it with fresh water.
Many factors that affect the longevity of cut flowers include :
Water PH, Cigarette Smoke, Burning Fire Places, Auto Emissions, Cooking Fumes, Fruit & Food Products in their presence, Hot, Cold, Humidity Levels, Breezes & Drafts, to name a few.
It is best to use Non-Softened water in all flowers & plants, and to use a tepid or almost room temperature water.
Keeping the PH level low will also extend the life of your flowers. An 1/8 teaspoon of citric acid, or a full can of lemon lime soda placed in approximately 2 quarts of water will usually reduce a high PH level.
Do not set fresh arrangements or cut flowers on top of TV's, as TV's give off extreme amounts of heat long after the TV has been turned off. Keep your cut flowers out of direct sunlight, or near heat registers.
