Rail service to the Florida Panhandle was suspended in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina caused massive damage to the rail infrastucture between New Orleans, LA and Mobile, AL. Amtrak responded to Congress' mandate with a report identifying the options, timelines and the cost to repair the rail infrastructure. They also identified the need for legislative action for additional funding.
