What Is A Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist who is skilled in the replacement and restoration of natural teeth.  A prosthodontist has three or more years of additional training following dental school and focuses their practice in this area to provide simple as well as complex dental care. Prosthodontists are specialists, in one field of dentistry, with training to provide restorative treatments, focusing on the artistic and biomechanical science of tooth replacement. Serving as the "architect and engineer" of a dental treatment plan, Dr. Nidal S. Elias will design the blueprint that forms the foundation for replacement teeth and their restorations, giving you back your smile.  Dr. Elias will often collaborate with oral surgeons, general dentists and other dental and healthcare specialists to develop solutions for dental challenges.

Prosthodontists, experts in recreating nature's balance, understand that missing teeth have an immediate impact on a person's quality of life.  As an American Dental Association recognized specialist in tooth restoration, Dr. Elias can recommend and provide the best treatment available, including single or multiple tooth replacements supported by dental implants, crowns and bridges, and partial and complete dentures. Depending upon your individual condition and needs, Dr. Elias can recommend the treatment that is right for you.

What Is Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is one of nine specialties that is recognized by the American Dental Association.  This specialty involves expertise in restorative treatment resulting in delivering smiles with high level function, maximum comfort and pristine esthetics.  Rigorous training in this field consists of head and neck anatomy, materials science, esthetics and occlusion (bite).  Cosmetics cases, full mouth reconstructions, TMJ related disorders, congenital disorders, and sleep apnea are a few of the areas of treatment involving prosthodontics.

Maxillofacial prosthetics is a sub-specialty of prosthodontics. Maxillofacial prosthodontists treat patients who have acquired congenital defects of the head and neck (maxillofacial) region due to surgery, trauma, and/or birth defects.  Artificial eyes (ocular prosthetics), ears, and maxillary obturators are commonly planned and fabricated by prosthodontists. Other prostheses include mouth devices used by amputees to aid in daily activities, tracheostomy obturators, and craniofacial prostheses.

Imperfect teeth, whether by birth abnormality, traumatic accident or natural decay, can be replaced with attractive, functional teeth in the office of a prosthodontist.
