Transmission Maintenance

Everyone knows the importance of regular vehicle maintenance such as oil changes and rotating tires, but what about transmission maintenance? Why is the transmission so important?

The transmission is a major part of your vehicle. It is made up of hundreds of complex components that enable your vehicle to move. The transmission fluid also serves a multitude of purposes. It cools, lubricates, transmits force, transmits pressure, inhibits varnish build-up and protects the transmission. Regular maintenance helps keep the transmission fluid clean and the transmission running smoothly. Harsh driving conditions can devastate the life of the transmission fluid, which can then lead to transmission failure. Old and dirty transmission fluid can lead to the need for an entirely new transmission. Regular transmission maintenance services can help to prevent transmission failures and keep your transmission in Road Ready condition.

Our transmission maintenance services include replacement of transmission fluid, replacement of the transmission filter (where applicable), replacement of the pan gasket and a lift inspection is performed.

To help familiarize you with the types of difficulties that may arise with the transmission, we have listed a few of the common malfunctions that can occur.

  • Loss of power upon acceleration
  • Transmission is unable to go into gear
  • Hard or late shifting of gears
  • Transmission slipping
  • Chatter or grinding noise in the transmission
  • Transmission leaking
  • Car is unable to move

Do's and Don'ts of Transmission Maintenance

Below are a few standard tips to help you avoid future transmission damage.

  • Do scheduled maintenance according to vehicle owner's manual.
  • Do have transmission fluid checked when having oil changed.
  • Do not drive a vehicle with low or no transmission fluid.
  • Do not change gear ranges from drive to reverse when your vehicle is moving.
  • Do not spin tires on turns with front wheel drive vehicles.
  • Do not drive your vehicle when there are transmission problems; this may cause further damage.
  • Do not drag race your vehicle as it puts unnecessary strain on your transmission.
  • Do not drive in 4x4 range on dry pavement unless vehicle is all-wheel or automatic 4x4.
  • Do make sure you come to a complete stop before moving gear into another range.
  • Do not drive for extended periods of time on spare tires or mismatched tire sizes with front-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles.

Transmission Repair

Today's transmission is much more complicated than it was in the past. There are hundreds of individual components inside transmissions. In order to properly repair your vehicle's transmission, these components must be dismantled, cleaned and inspected for wear to provide you with an accurate assessment of your transmission's tolerance levels. All worn and/or damaged parts are either repaired or replaced. After the parts are thoroughly inspected and repaired, they are reassembled, adjusted and tested for proper operation.

Some transmission repairs require only an adjustment that can be made without removing the entire transmission. Newer model cars that are computer controlled can sometimes have faulty sensors or bad connections. Once the source of the problem part is identified it can be replaced or repaired.

Older automobiles that are experiencing transmission problems may require adjustments to parts such as bands or throttle cables.

Repairs can also include a reseal. If your vehicle is leaving spots on your driveway, you may be leaking transmission fluid —  in which case a reseal job is needed. A technician will perform a lift inspection to determine where the leak is occurring and then perform the reseal job.

FAQ

Q: How much will a transmission repair cost?

A: Repair costs depend on what is wrong with the transmission and what parts may be required to correct the problem. Overall, 60% of all repairs are minor ones that do not require a complete overhaul of the transmission. Today's transmissions are more sophisticated and require extensive testing to determine the reason for failure. Milex/Mr. Transmission offers a free performance check to determine what, if anything, is wrong with the vehicle's transmission.

Transmission Rebuild

If your free transmission performance check reveals that major repairs are needed for your transmission, a transmission rebuild may be necessary. For this repair the entire transmission is removed and disassembled. Each part within the system is then inspected. Upon inspection the technician will determine the extent of damage. Some parts may only require a deep cleaning while others may require replacement. The parts are then reassembled, adjusted and tested for proper operation. Last, the transmission is reinstalled with final adjustments being made after reinstallation.

Free Performance Check

At Milex/Mr. Transmission we offer our customers a free performance check to help diagnose any problems with your vehicle's transmission. Our comprehensive performance check consists of a fluid check, road test, pan examination and lift inspection/diagnosis. This provides a complete diagnosis of your car's transmission performance and general operation.

Fluid Check
The fluid check is generally the first indicator of possible transmission wear and damage. A transmission in good condition will have a clear, red fluid. If there is an unpleasant odor or discoloration in combination with other symptoms, your transmission may require an internal inspection. During our inspection of your fluid, we will determine if any of these symptoms appear.

Road Test
The road test is made up of two parts: a stationary test and a driving test. During these two tests, your transmission is checked for slipping noises, harsh/soft or erratic shifting, as well as late or early shift patterns.

Pan Examination
The pan examination can be a great indicator of potential problems because it allows a partial look inside the transmission. All pans have some metal particles; however, excessive amounts of metal indicate internal wear and damage to the transmission.

Lift Inspection
This step will help determine what type of adjustment, repair or replacement may be needed. During a lift inspection, one of our technicians will check the following items.

  • Neutral Switch
  • Throttle Linkage
  • Manual Linkage
  • Modulator
  • Modulator Vacuum
  • Transmission Mounts
  • U-Joints
  • Fluid Retention
  • Electronic Components

When the results of your performance check show that there is an internal problem with your transmission, we recommend further investigation with an internal inspection of your transmission. This inspection consists of the removal of your transmission and disassembly of the unit in order to view all internal parts. During this inspection, all parts will be examined for wear and damage. When the inspection is completed, one of our technicians will provide you with a report of those items that are in need of either repair or replacement, along with an estimate for those services.

Recommendations after a performance check:

1. No transmission problem exists. The performance check indicated at this time that no repair or adjustment is needed.
2. Preventive Maintenance Service - This service helps to prevent transmission trouble before it starts. Our technicians will replace your vehicle's transmission fluid and filter if applicable.
3. External Adjustment/Repair - This service includes any repairs to the exterior of the transmission that does not involve the removal of the transmission.
4. Reseal Service - This requires the removal of the transmission to replace all leaking external seals in your vehicle's transmission. We perform this service after inspection of the transmission. It is designed to repair leaking transmissions which have no other internal problems.
5. Internal Inspection Services - Our technicians will completely and thoroughly evaluate all internal components of your vehicle's transmission. We perform this service if the performance check indicates you have an internal transmission problem. We remove the transmission, disassemble and check all internal parts of the transmission for wear and tear. Our technician, upon your approval, will replace only those necessary parts with parts meeting OEM specifications to give your transmission the ability to obtain optimal performance. Finally, after any work is completed the transmission is reinstalled into the vehicle.

Once your vehicle has undergone our performance check and you have received an expert service from our trained technicians, you can rest assured that your vehicle is Road Ready.
