William (Bill) H. Haggard, Jr. 62 of Asheville passed away Sunday morning, October 25, 2009 in the Intensive care unit of the Charles George Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville.

Born July 3, 1947 in Wilson, North Carolina, Bill was the son of William H. Haggard of Asheville, NC and Blanche Woolard Haggard of Fletcher, NC.

Bill attended schools in Tallahassee, FL, Oxon Hill, MD and Asheville; graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA; then attended Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, NC before enlisting in the US Navy.  During the Vietnam War, he became disabled while on active duty.  Returning to Asheville, he engaged in the retail clothing business for a number of years.

He then volunteered at the Charles George Veterans Administration Hospital for 20 years, and is credited with over 26,000 hours of volunteer service.

He is survived by his daughter Shelby Haggard of Mt. Pleasant, SC, his parents, his brother, Robert H. Haggard of Fletcher, NC, his former wife, Margaret Davis of Williamston, SC and an aunt, Marjorie Whittaker of Winter Park, FL.

A memorial service is planned for 2 PM on November 4, 2009 at the Chapel in the Charles George Veterans Administration Hospital on Tunnel Road.  Interment will be private.
