Ermengarde W. Hawkins, 94, formerly of Sunset Drive, died at the WNC Baptist Home on Friday, November 28, 2008. She had been a resident of Asheville for 55 years.
A native of Durham, NC, she was the daughter of the late Walter George and Mary Elizabeth Wegener. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Melvin P. Hawkins. She was a graduate of Duke University, and a member of Central Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where she sang in the church choir and played piano for the children’s choir.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by two sons: Melvin P. Hawkins, Jr. of Asheville, and David W. Hawkins and wife, Amy, of Alexandra, VA; two daughters: Janice McGalliard and husband, Richard, of Atlanta, GA, and Linda Paul and husband, Staley, of Norfolk, VA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Central United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Blackburn, Jr. officiating. The family will receive visitors in the church parlor following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 1, 2008, at the Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Ministry at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801.
