He was born Nov. 14, 1913 in Anderson, SC to Bratton and Eliza Colvin Simpson, the second of four children. In the 1920's the family moved backed to Asheville, his mother's hometown, where his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James G. Colvin, and many aunts, uncles and cousins resided.
He married the former Grace Glover, also of Asheville, and joined the Army during World War II, serving in Europe in General Patton's 765th Ordnance Lt. Maintenance Company. In his younger years he enjoyed golf and hunting, and loved barbershop quartet music, having a tenor voice which his family loved to hear. Despite his total deafness during his later years, he maintained his wit and personality, always ready with a good joke to share.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Grace, brother Jim Simpson, sister Allie Louise "Booty" Roberts, and nephew Jack Roberts III. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Simpson of Asheville, with whom he made his home for the last 18 years, where she cared for him until illness necessitated his move to WNC Babtist home in March.
