Dr. Thomas C. Dula, Jr. 87, formerly of Howland, Ohio died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, NC. Son of the late Thomas C. Dula Sr. and Nellie Sly, he was born May 3, 1921 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio.
Dr. Dula attended Howland Township schools, graduated from Howland High School in 1939, from Tennessee Military Institute with graduate credits in 1941 and then transferred to Ohio University. He earned his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate Degrees from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
He taught at Johnston High School in Ohio where he coached basketball, baseball and boxing. He was on the Faculty and Administration at Chipola Junior College, Marianna, FL and St. Petersburg Jr. College, St. Petersburg, FL. He was Registrar at Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida; President of Tennessee Military Institute, Sweetwater, TN, and on the Administration Staff at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where he was Dean of Students and Assistant to the Chancellor from 1966 until his retirement in 1980.
Dr. Dula had many passions, he was an avid fisherman, antique car, aviation, and railroad enthusiast, and he loved Florida State Seminole Sports. He played French horn, golf and enjoyed history. Above all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife, Constance Montgomery Dula of Fletcher, NC; nine children, Thomas C. Dula and his wife, Gail of Oviedo, FL; James M. Dula and his wife, Patricia of Maryville, TN; John H. Dula and his wife, Linda of Gray, TN; Robert B. Dula and his wife, Teresa of Gainesville, GA; Constance A. Dula of Keller, TX; Carolyn A. O’Gorman, and her husband, Kevin of Keller TX; William E. Dula and his wife, Kimberly of Suwannee, GA; Elizabeth J. Dula of Swannanoa, NC; and Kenneth M. Dula of Asheville, NC; fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 10:30AM, Saturday, October 18, 2008 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Arden, NC.
