Lucile “Lucy” Irene Adams Schifflin, 95 died on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community. Mrs. Schifflin was born on April 4,1913 in Kimbolton, Ohio (near Cambridge) the daughter of the late Boyd Cameron and Mary Elizabeth Montgomery Adams.
She was a graduate of Ohio State University in the Food Sciences/Nutrition/Dietician Program and worked as a Lunchroom Manager for the Detroit Public Schools until she met her husband John B. Schifflin. They were married on November 24,1938 in Detroit. In 1946 they moved to Milwaukee, WI and lived there until 1961 when Square D transferred the family to Asheville. For over 20 years they dedicated their time to retarded citizens and were instrumental in helping establish the Irene Wortham Center. Lucy was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and the women of the church awarded her an Honorary Life Membership in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband John “Jack” Schifflin who died on March 11, 2005 and a son Stephen Perry Schifflin who died in infancy. She was also preceded in death by a sister Helene Gertrude Adams who died in infancy, two brothers William M. Adams of Detroit, Michigan and Renwick Glenn Adams of Johnstown, Ohio.
She is survived by two sons John B. Schifflin and Michael H. Schifflin both of Milwaukee, WI. , two daughters Janet C. Schifflin of Asheville, NC. and Linda S. Coyle and her husband Jay of Middleton, WI. and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Bill Buchanan, Mark Ramsey and Morgan Gardner, Chaplin of St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield Retirement Community officiating.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at Deerfield who cared for “Mom” throughout her time in skilled care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 789 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, NC. 28804, the Irene Wortham Center, 916 W. Chapel Road, Asheville, NC 28803 or Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the Church.
