Iva S. Haraway of College Walk Retirement Community in Brevard, NC died Monday, March 3 after a short illness. She was widow of Harry W. Haraway, who died in 2004 and Charles E. Eggleston, who died in 1980. She was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and lived in Brevard since 1962.
She was daughter of the late Charles Brooker Shorter and his wife, Olivia Wyatt Shorter. She attended public schools in Virginia and was a graduate of Averette College (now Averette University), Danville, Virginia.
In Brevard she was active in the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served on numerous Church committees. During her working career she was an Executive Assistant at DuPont Corporation. She and her first husband, Charles were avid golfers and were involved in founding and development of Glen Cannon Country Club in Pisgah Forest.
She was one of eleven children and is survived by her sister Olivia Wyatt Shorter Stevens of Ocala, Florida. She is also survived by six nephews, nine nieces and numerous great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews. Her niece, Sara Shorter, best described Iva with adjectives: “humble, kind, generous, light-hearted, disciplined and thoughtful.”
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 11 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at 325 North Broad Street, Brevard, NC, the Rev. Michael Jordan officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Graveside services will be Saturday, March 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, Callands, Virginia, the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating and the Rev. Jordan participating.
