Tips

bathroom drainsWhile some emergencies require a plumber, you can do some simple things to keep your drains and appliances working correctly, saving you time and money before costly repairs are needed. At Marshall Plumbing, we’re pleased to share the following tips compiled from our years of experience.

Always follow manufacturer recommendations for your garbage disposal including types of food remains to be avoided. Let the water run before, during and after use typically for around two minutes. To reset the disposal, most have a small button on the unit you just need to press.

In the kitchen, try and minimize the amount of grease and fat going down the drain. You can easily catch most cooking fats, let them cool and seal and dispose of them in the trash. Wipe down greasy pans with a paper towel before washing – if you use a cloth towel, that grease will end up in your washer drain or your other clothes.

Did you know soap, shaving cream and toothpaste residues can build up in your bathroom drains? Let the water run when rinsing these products out. Also, avoid keeping small objects near the toilet or bathtub where they can easily fall in and cause clogs. An easy solution for the tub or shower is to install a strainer; this will catch hair as well.
