SENSOR TROUBLESHOOTING

WHERE ARE THE SENSORS LOCATED?

The garage door safety sensors are located near the bottom of the door frame on each side of the opening.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN THE SENSORS ARE THE CAUSE OF AN OPENER PROBLEM?

Whenever you have to hold the wall button down for closing the door. Holding the button down is an override for the sensors. This is the same for most brands of garage door openers.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY REMOTES WON'T CLOSE THE DOOR AND I HAVE TO HOLD THE WALL BUTTON IN TO CLOSE THE DOOR?

Check to see whether the sensor lights are on, off, or blinking.

  • The green light** on the Genie Screwdrive & Stealth models should always be on & steady. If it is off, there is no power.
  • The red light will blink if something is wrong. Make sure there are no obvious obstructions and that no shadows are being cast directly into the lens path. Clean the sensor lenses and check each of the sensors to make sure that the brackets holding them up are not bent. If either bracket is bent simply bend it gently back and forth in order to line it up directly with the sensor on the other side. Check to make sure the wire is plugged into each sensor.
  • You can also unplug the motor from the ceiling outlet and plug it right back in.
  • If you are unable to resolve the problem, please call our office to schedule a service call.

**Note: older Genie models may not have a green light – focus most of your attention on the red light!

HOW DO I USE THE MANUAL DISCONNECT ON MY GARAGE DOOR OPENER DURING A POWER OUTAGE?

On a Genie opener there should be a red cord tied to a silver lever. To disconnect for manual use, simply pull down on the red cord and raise the door manually. To reconnect the opener, push up on the silver lever that the cord is tied to. If lever will not lock into place, simply move the door up or down a hair and try again until it locks into place.

To disconnect  a Hormann opener, pull down on the cord and raise the door manually. To reconnect the opener, simply push the green button above the cord, then press your wall button and wait until the belt cycles and catches onto the door. Push the wall button a second time to operate the door.

HOW DO I RESET MY GARAGE DOOR OPENER AFTER A POWER SURGE?

If your garage door opener will not respond or is behaving as though there is a sensor problem after a recent storm or power loss:

·         Locate the ceiling outlet that your opener motor is plugged into.

·         Unplug the opener, wait about 20 seconds, the plug it back in.

This will reset the circuit board and your door should operate normally. If the problem persists, please feel free to call us!

WHAT SIZE BATTERIES DO MY REMOTES TAKE?

  • 9 or 12-volt batteries are the most commonly used for garage door remotes
  • Beginning Summer 2010, Genie Intellicode remotes began using a 3-volt battery
  • Can purchase in local grocery stores or retail stores (often found near camera/electronic section)*

Note: Be sure to check the date code as these batteries are not commonly used.

WHAT SHOULD I LUBRICATE MY GARAGE DOOR WITH?

  • Pro 21 (sold at Lester's Garage Doors) Used for door hinges, roller, and springs.*
  • Silicon Spray

* WD-40 evaporates very quickly, and the door will need lubricated more often. Our Pro 2l spray will last for at least one year before more lubricant will be needed.

WHAT SHOULD I LUBRICATE MY GENIE OPENER WITH?

  • Lubriplate** (sold at Lester's Garage Doors)
  • Genie lubricant (sold at Lester's Garage Doors -says "Genie" on tube; it will cover one application only)

WHAT SHOULD I PAINT MY GARAGE DOOR WITH?

Steel doors should be painted with a high quality exterior latex (water base) paint. The surface must be cleaned prior to application of paint to the steel. On new doors, the surface just needs to be wiped down with a damp cloth. Doors which have been installed for a while should be cleaned with a tri-sodium-phosphate based product (such as Soilax„ or diluted Spic-n-Span or a mild household cleaner). Doors do not require a coat of primer unless the finish has been damaged down to the silver galvanizing.

DOES MY GARAGE DOOR NEED TO BE WINDLOADED?

Yes! Wind-load refers to the, “forces or pressures that are exerted on a structure and the components comprising the structure (such as garage doors, entry door, windows, etc.).”[1] All doors sold by Lester’s are tested to determine how much pressure they can handle from wind during a storm and can withstand winds up to 110 m.p.h in good condition.

It is required by the State of Florida that all garage doors must have been tested to stand up to hurricane force winds, that a permit must be pulled in order to install a garage door, and a final inspection be performed by a local building official.

In Alachua County, all new garage doors are required to withstand at least 110 m.p.h. winds.

PERMIT INFORMATION

DO I REALLY NEED A PERMIT TO REPLACE MY DOOR?

Yes! It is required by the State of Florida that all garage doors must have been tested to stand up to hurricane force winds, that a permit be pulled in order to install a garage door, and that a final inspection be performed by a local building official. The amount of windload varies by location within the state.

ONCE MY DOOR IS INSTALLED, AND I RECEIVE MY PERMIT, WHAT'S NEXT?

At this point, a final inspection by a city or county codes official is needed. You should call our office and schedule the appointment through us. Ask for our permit coordinator.

DOES THAT MEAN THE INSPECTION WILL BE DONE BY YOUR COMPANY?

No. It is required that we schedule the inspection because we pulled the permit. However, there will not be an employee of Lester's Garage Doors inspecting your door. An official from the city or county will be scheduled to come to your home and inspect our work on a day of your choosing.

CAN I REQUEST A SPECIFIC APPOINTMENT TIME?

No. Neither the city or county will schedule a specific time. You will need to choose a day that you can be home all day.

CAN I LEAVE MY DOOR ON MANUAL/OPEN AND THE INSPECTOR JUST COME BY?

No. The inspector will not come onto your property if no one is home. The inspection would be failed by the inspector and there would be a charge to reschedule.
