Over 15 Years of Experience in the Sod Business

Sod
Sodding is more expensive than sprigging and plugging, but it produces a so-called "instant lawn". Without proper site preparation and post-installation care, however, the sod can die almost as easily as any other newly planted area.

Before buying the sod, inspect it carefully to guarantee the absence of noxious weeds and other pests such as insects and nematodes.

Store the sod in a cool, shady place until used.
Sod life on pallets during the summer is less than
48 hours.

The area to be planted should be properly prepared (e.g., tilled and raked smooth) and moistened at the time of laying sod. Sod pieces should be fitted together as tightly as possible, but the sod should not be stretched to fit an area. If cracks are evident between pieces, they should be filled with topsoil.

Tamp or roll the sod to remove air pockets and ensure good soil contact. If the root is not in contact with the underlying soil, it will dry and die.

If the sod is wet, but the soil below is allowed to dry out, the roots will not penetrate below the original layer of sod. Do not let the soil dry out until a good union between the sod and soil surface has been achieved. Light, frequent applications of soil topdressing will help to smooth out the lawn surface. Sodding is expensive, but is recommended where immediate cover is desired for an aesthetic reason or to prevent soil erosion.
