SAPPHIRE AND RUBY

Sapphires occur in nature in an astonishing array of colors including pinks, reds, yellows, purples, and of course, blues. Sapphire and ruby are both ideal materials for jewelry that receives hard wear such as an engagement ring. Sapphire and ruby are of the same gem species, corundum, and are very hard, durable materials resistant to chipping and scratching. In addition, they are very beautiful, with rich saturated colors and high indices of refraction giving them wonderful warmth and sparkle. Individual sapphires and rubies also vary widely in price so a beautiful stone can be found to fit almost any budget. They make a lovely alternative to diamond for wedding jewelry.

WHAT MAKES A SAPPHIRE OR RUBY MORE EXPENSIVE?

Color, color, color. In sapphire and rubies, as with other colored stones, the value and the beauty are all about the color. The most expensive colors in sapphires and rubies will be intense, pure, medium to medium-dark vivid colors with even color distribution. Stones with very saturated, bright, vivid tones are considered the most desirable.

CEYLON SAPPHIRE AND BURMA RUBY

The terms Ceylon sapphire and Burmese rubies denote both a country of origin and a color family. Ceylon and Kashmir sapphires have the intense, bright medium to medium-dark blue that is the best that sapphire has to offer. Burmese rubies have a bright “pigeons blood” ruby color without gray or brown tones. I handle all types of sapphires and rubies from high-end Kashmir, Padparadscha, and Burmese stones to more affordably priced Thai and Australian stones.

EMERALD, TANZANITE, AND OTHER COLORED GEMSTONES

Emerald comes primarily from South America and Africa. Columbian emeralds have long been considered the best but Africa also produces beautiful emeralds. Tanzanite is also and African gem species and occurs in rich, velvety shades of violet and blue, sometimes mimicking the color of fine sapphire. Emerald and tanzanite are softer gem species, beautiful to wear but more vulnerable to chipping and scratching. I handle both South American and African emerald and tanzanite and recommend it especially for pendants and earrings.
