- 1. How do I know if I am a candidate for hair transplant surgery?
- Quite honestly, there are very few people who are not candidates. Color, texture, and density of the hair as well as skin tone, contribute to the type of results you will have. A complimentary consultation with Dr. Koher will determine if hair restoration is right for you.
- 2. How long will I be at the office for my procedure?
- Hair restoration surgery is an outpatient procedure. We use local anesthesia, and you are alert and oriented for the entire process. You are so comfortable that you are able to enjoy a movie and lunch. The procedure lasts from four to six hours and you are able to drive yourself home.
- 3. What level of discomfort will I experience with a hair transplant procedure with Dr. Koher?
- The procedure itself is painless. The Compumed Anesthesia unit, which is a state-of-the-art anesthesia device, administers the medicine, which is delivered one droplet at a time.
- 4. What will my activity level be after my transplant?
- You may return to work the next day if you do not have a job that requires heavy lifting. Most people do allow one to two days of recovery time. Normal regimens may be resumed; however, strenuous activities should be avoided for approximately 1 day.
- 5. When will I have to come back to the office?
- Sutures are removed approximately eight to ten days after surgery. Then appointments will be at six months and twelve months to follow up and review your hair growth. These appointments are necessary to ensure proper post-operative care.
- 6. When will my hair start to grow?
- The transplanted hair begins to grow 12 weeks after surgery. This is the START button. The hair at six months will be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length. It will continue to grow at your normal rate. The one-year mark generally displays the maximum effect for this procedure.
- 7. When can I get a haircut?
- The simplest answer to this question is, your normal hair maintenance can resume immediately after sutures have been removed. You can even color, perm, add hair products, and style your hair anyway you wish. Remember, this is your own permanent, growing hair.
- 8. Are there any complications from surgery?
- Complications from surgery are extremely rare. We will provide you, at no extra charge, with medications to prevent infection, swelling, and discomfort, and even a spray that will speed the healing process. Occasionally patients will experience swelling at the forehead or around the eyes. This is neither harmful nor dangerous and goes away quickly.
- 9. Do I need any special shampoos or gels after surgery?
- You do not need any special hair care products for your newly transplanted hair. However, you may have a renewed interest in these products as you grow new hair!
- 10. How can I continue to keep my existing hair after my hair transplant procedure?
- Although the transplanted hair is not dependent upon the use of medications, products such as Propecia and Regain can aid in retaining your existing hair and slow down the hair loss process.
- 11. Is there anything I need to do prior to surgery?
- We ask that most patients who are on vitamins, aspirin or ibuprofen therapy, and any type of anticoagulants, discontinue use for fourteen days prior to surgery. We also recommend not consuming alcoholic beverages for three days prior to surgery. Avoid heavy exercise five days prior to surgery.
- 12. Does insurance cover hair restoration Surgery?
- This is considered elective, cosmetic surgery and is normally not covered under most insurance policies. However, if you have a special medical condition which has caused you to lose your hair, please check with your insurance company to find out if you would be covered.
- 13. Does Dr. Koher transplant eyebrows?
- Dr. Koher has done multiple eyebrow transplants. He feels that most people underestimate the importance of eyebrows in framing the face, drawing attention to the eyes, and communicating through facial expressions.Have you ever seen a person that looked odd but you could not immediately determine what gave you that feeling? Most people totally ignore eyebrows on themselves and other people until they are gone. Then you get that nagging, something missing feeling. Check the eyebrows!Eyebrow hair loss can occur for many reasons. Some of the most common are as follows:
-
- Physical trauma such as cuts or burns.
- Excessive plucking, both intentionally to reshape the eyebrows or unintentional
- plucking such as Trichotillomania which is a compulsive hair plucking disorder.
- Genetics
- Medical treatments like radiation therapy or chemotherapy
- Various systemic diseases or hormonal imbalances
- The problem with other eyebrow replacement techniques is esthetics. Eyebrow pencils and tattooing cannot duplicate the texture of real hair. Don't get any closer than ten feet to a person with tattooed eyebrows and they might look real. Dr. Koher is experienced in eyebrow transplants for both men and women. He can show you before and after pictures of his work. Eyebrow hairs grow in many different directions in a small area so precision and experience is critical. The procedure does not take as long as replacing a hairline or filling in a crown. As usual it is done under local anesthetic in a relaxed, comforting environment. After a few hours, you have the beginning of permanent, natural eyebrows once again.
