Company History

Howren Music and Sound was started in 1948 by John B. Howren, Sr. (Jack). He has been the Director of Music at Belmont Central High School, where his band was awarded 1st place in a national competition. “Jack” also taught the traveling Glee Club at Belmont Abbey College, and he also played violin in the Charlotte Symphony.

He was instrumental (no pun intended) in getting North Carolina to add Music Education to its curriculum. Jack taught his wife, Saint Claire, and his 4 sons how to operate the business. He formed Howren Music and Sound into one of the most popular full-service music dealers with access to thousands of musical products. A music scholarship is awarded each year as a reminder of the influence this pioneer of music education had on his community.
