FAQ

on the job injuries, job related illnesses, state laws for workers compensation

What is workers compensation?

Workers compensation is a state-mandated insurance program that provides compensation to employees who suffer job-related injuries and illnesses. While the federal government administers a workers comp program for federal and certain other types of employees, each state has its own laws and programs for workers compensation.

Are all on-the-job injuries covered by workers compensation?

There are some limits. The system is designed to provide benefits to injured workers, even if the injury is caused by the employer or employee. Employees that are injured due to intoxication or the use of illegal drugs are not covered by workers compensation.

Coverage can also be denied in situations involving:

  • Self inflicted injuries
  • Injuries suffered while committing a crime
  • Injuries suffered while not on the job
  • Injuries sustained in direct violation of company policy
