How to Know It Is Time for Assisted Living

When is it time to consider moving to an assisted living community? The answers can vary greatly among individuals, but several themes are common.

First, older people in all physical conditions eventually find that it is draining on their time, energy, and health to continue the upkeep on a house. Senior living offers a lifestyle free from the burdens of home ownership.  Maintenance departments fix leaks and changes bulbs. Housekeeping and laundry services are provided regularly.

Secondly, as we age, medical needs increase. Assisted living can manage medication, schedule doctor appointments, and monitor chronic conditions. Emergency pendant alerts give around-the-clock access to nurses in case of illness or injury. Often, communities have “house call” doctors for both regular checkups and also acute illnesses. Moreover, caregivers to help with the activities of daily living make a tremendous difference. Meal preparation along with bathing, dressing assistance, and beauty salon services are all offered in assisted living. After losing a spouse, seniors can become lonely and withdrawn. Senior living presents an array of social opportunities. The many neighbors give daily opportunities to kindle new friendships and interact with visitors and staff. Activity personnel schedule games, parties, classes, worship services, book clubs, and crafts. Transportation is provided for outside events like shopping, movies, and workshops. Special occasions and holidays are commemorated together at meals or celebrations attended by residents and their families.

Finally, when families cannot personally attend to the day-to-day care of an aging parent due to employment or other commitments, senior communities can help by providing options for “aging in place.” This means encouraging independence while providing assistance when needed. Knowing that a loved one has the needed care allows an adult child to continue with the requirements of his or her own life with peace of mind.

So, how do you know when it is time to make the move? When housing upkeep becomes overwhelmingly burdensome, when help is needed with on-going medical conditions or the activities of d aily life, when there is concern that a senior adult is lonely or bored and needs companionship, or when one constantly worries about a parent who lives alone and is struggling, it may be time to give your local senior community a call to see what they have to offer.
