Common Questions
-
WHEN SHOULD I GET A PAP SMEAR?
All women should begin getting Pap smears when they become sexually active. Otherwise, it is recomended that you get your Pap smear every year unless your Health care provider suggests more frequent testing.
WHY DO I NEED TO WAIT UNTIL I MISS A PERIOD TO TAKE A PREGNANCY TEST?
Urine pregnancy tests are based on the concentration of HCG in the urine. If the test is taken too early in the pregnancy or if the urine is diluted from drinking a lot of water you could have a "false" negative result when you are actually pregnant. Waiting seven days after you are expected to have your period assures that your period is just not late and that the HCG needed will be high enough to avoid a false negative result.
MY LAST PERIOD WAS FEBRUARY 14TH AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW APPROXIMATELY WHEN MY BABY IS DUE. HOW CAN I DETERMINE THE APPROXIMATE DATE?
The easy way to determine your approximate due date is simple: Add 7 days to the first day of your last menstrual period
Example: 14 ---------------- 21
Subtract 3 Months
Example: February ------------------- November
Your approximate due date in this example is November 21.
I WAS RECENTLY WITH A NEW SEXUAL PARTNER AND DID NOT USE CONDOMS. SHOULD I BE WORRIED ABOUT A SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTION?
Yes. There are many sexually transmitted infections; some are curable, and many have no symptoms. The most common types are:
TRICHOMONAS GONORRHEA CHLAMYDIA HERPES HPV HIV
Condoms are the only family planning method that protects against HIV and AIDS. Use a condom every time.
I AM 51 AND I HAVE NOT HAD MY PERIOD IN 14 MONTHS. AM I IN MENOPAUSE?
Menopause is generally defined as cessation of menses for a period of 12 months or more. You are most likely in menopause. Healthcare, including diet, breast care screening, bone screening and cardiovascular health, is important during the menopausal years. You should see an OB/GYN Healthcare provider yearly.
