How does the bleaching process work? Is it harmful to my teeth?
The bleaching process is done under the doctor's supervision through a custom made appliance that is worn over your teeth while you sleep. A thin layer of bleaching gel is placed in the tray. The active ingredient in the gel, carbamide peroxide, is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin and bleaches the colored substances. The structure of the tooth is not changed: only the tooth color is made lighter. Research indicates that whitening the teeth with carbamide peroxide under the supervision of a dentist is safe for teeth and gums.

Why do I need my teeth professionally cleaned?
Professional cleanings are the only way to remove hardened deposits of tartar (calculus) from the teeth. If these deposits are not removed, gum disease and periodontal disease usually result. Professional cleanings smooth and polish teeth and fillings so they are less likely to accumulate plaque, the sticky film of germs and food that forms daily. Finally, a cleaning removes stains and mild discolorations so the teeth look better.
