WHAT IS A MID LEVEL PRACTITIONER?

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are mid level practitioners. A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has obtained further specialized education in diagnosing and managing common and complex medical conditions. They are licensed by the state in which they practice and most are also board certified.

A physician assistant (PA) is a graduate of a specialized program which lasts approximately 2-3 years. Most programs require at least 2 years of college and some health care experience. They are also licensed and certified.

Both work in collaboration with or under a physician’s supervision. Both physician assistants and nurse practitioners obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations. They also diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions such as infections, injuries, diabetes, and high blood pressure. They order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as blood work, x-rays,ultrasounds, or EKGs. They prescribe medications, and other treatments such as physical therapy. The PA or NP can manage a patient’s overall care.

WHO TAKES CARE OF ME IN THE HOSPITAL?

Servicing our patients has changed over the years. In the past, the role of the Family Physician would be to treat patients both in the office setting and carry that continuity to the hospital if hospitalization was required. Many Family Physicians even assisted at surgery and performed the full spectrum of Obstetrics.

The role of the Family Physician has changed over the last few decades. Today most Family Physicians focus their attention on their office practice, leaving the hospital care to “Hospitalists.” So what is a “Hospitalist?”

Hospitalists are physicians who focus their medical practice primarily to hospital care and do not have an outpatient office. They act as the attending physician coordinating the care of the patient during their hospital stay. Hospitalists consult various specialists to assist them in developing appropriate treatment plans and management of your care during the hospital stay.

CFP Physicians utilize various Hospitalist groups, depending on the hospital in which you are admitted.
