Protect Your Eyes From Ultraviolet Rays

The link between long term exposure to ultraviolet rays and skin damage, from "premature aging" to cancer has been well documented. Most people today know to use a sun block product and understand that the higher the SPF number, the longer and more complete the protection. But these products don't really "block" the sun, they filter out the ultraviolet portion of sunlight, greatly reducing our exposure to these damaging rays.

But what about your eyes? The same ultraviolet light is associated with cataract formation and possible retina damage. To prevent this, you should have an ultraviolet block put in your prescription glasses or wear good quality sunglasses when outside. The ultraviolet block for regular eyeglass lenses is a clear coating that will filter out 97 - 100% of the harmful light. Most of the special lens materials available today for thinner, lighter lenses already include full UV protection. You can't tell it's there, because the ultraviolet light that is being blocked is invisible to our eyes, but the protection is there! Think of it as "sun block" for your eyes.

Of course, all high quality sunglasses have full ultraviolet protection. So for maximum comfort, a good pair of sunglasses reduces the brightness and protects your eyes at the same time. And for maximum glare protection a sunglass with polarized lenses can't be beat! One of our Opticians will be happy to demonstrate the advantage of polarized lenses to you, and they are also available in prescription.
