How often should I change my filter?

Changing the filters affects the air flow, which affects the overall performance of both heating and air conditioning units. Regular, planned changes of the filters during periods of high usage — heating in the winter, cooling in the summer — is a requirement to realizing the best efficiency of the equipment. With a dirty, clogged filter, adequate air flow is prevented, fans and motors work harder, controls are engaged longer, and the system is stressed.

We recommend that the filters are inspected and replaced, if necessary, at least once a month during the high-usage months. The frequency of inspection can be reduced as the temperature and weather conditions dictate.

How often should I have my equipment inspected and serviced by a qualified technician?

Regularly scheduled preventative maintenance is an investment in problem prevention. A thorough professional service inspection on each piece of equipment twice a year — heating systems in the fall, cooling systems in the spring — can keep your units running at peak performance. Preventative Maintenance Contracts are available from Boone Heating & Air Conditioning; inspections are scheduled at your convenience.

What is the best thermostat setting?

The thermostat should be set as high as you feel comfortable with to optimize your energy consumption during the summer cooling months, and as low as you feel comfortable with during the winter months. Each area of your home may have different comfort requirements or zones, i.e. cooler in the sleeping areas, warmer in family areas. Modern-technology thermostats may be set and/or programmed in a variety of ways to control your home’s temperature from the time you awaken until retiring in the evening, optimizing your heating/cooling system’s energy consumption.

How oftern should I have Freon added to my air conditioner or heat pump?

If during a routine preventative maintenance inspection Freon is required to be added, further investigation is required to discover the reason why. There may be a problem. Freon should only be added if a leak has occurred and some of the gas has escaped. The technician will check the system with special tools and techniques to find the leak, notify you of the problem, and present a recommended repair.
