Dr. Christi B. Abernathy, DMD, PA, FADI, began her career in dentistry over 30 years ago. After working as a dental assistant, she then went on to become a hygienist. She worked as a hygienist for 12 years before deciding to go back to school to further her knowledge and skills to be a dentist. In 1992, Dr. Abernathy opened her doors of her own practice, known today as Asheville Family Dentistry.
As an active member in the North Carolina Dental Society, Dr. Abernathy has held several administrative positions such as the Director of the Buncombe County Dental Clinic, where she implemented several programs to serve the underprivileged, as well as Dental Director of J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, where she brought her enthusiasm and passion of helping those with special needs. Dr. Abernathy has held many titles such as the committee chairperson for dental services at Memorial Mission Hospital and Deputy Examiner for the NC State Board of Dental Examiners just to name a few. Her experience has many ranges from general dentistry to forensic odontology.
Dr. Abernathy has over 975 continuing education hours in varied courses including esthetics, forensics, advanced restorative techniques, management, leadership and development, pediatrics, orthodontics, total IV/conscious sedation dentistry, and dentistry for the developmentally disabled. She has over 117 hours specified to forensic dentistry in pursuit of Boart Certification in Forensic Odontology, including Armed Forced Institute of Pathology Disaster and Identification Training, 1999 and 2005. 193 of those hours are in the field of implant placement and restoration.
