Office Hours:Every first visit to Asheville Family Dentistry begins with a new patient appointment. At this visit, we take the time to talk with you about what is important to you concerning your dental care. We want to know about you, your needs, and your concerns. This gives our office a better understanding of why you chose us and helps us to choose the best treatment for you. Your first visit with Dr. Abernathy consists of taking a complete set of X-rays, periodontal charting of your gum health, and an exam. All of these tools help us decide on a treatment plan that is best for you.
Preventative Maintenance
The best way to keep your teeth healthy and clean is through preventative maintenance. Dr. Abernathy and our hygienist work with you to show you proper brushing and flossing for basic maintenance, along with routine visits for cleanings. These visits are vital for maintaining healthy gums and teeth. We want you to have the best smile that you can have. Some aspects of preventative maintenance that we offer include the following:

Periodontal Program
Periodontal disease is an infection caused by bacteria found in the dental plaque that forms on your teeth and gums. The more severe form, called periodontis, can result in inflammation, bleeding gums and gradual loss of bone around your teeth. Dr. Abernathy offers a non-surgical periodontal program. This program is customized for each individual patient’s need. Whether it’s as simple as a one scaling and root planning visit or an entire treatment, our hygienist works to make it so that you don’t have to be referred to a periodontist for this treatment.
Restorative Dental Care
Retaining your natural teeth is ideal, and we work hard to preserve them. Dr. Abernathy only does fillings with composite resin so that your tooth retains a natural appearance. We have the most up-to-date technology to recreate a natural smile from tooth-colored fillings to state-of-the-art crown restoration with the CEREC 3 system. The CEREC 3 is a computerized system that offers same-day-visit crown, inlay, and onlay restorations. Other restorative services that we provide include the following:
Sedation Dentistry and Nitrous Oxide
As a past fearful patient herself, Dr. Abernathy understands the fear and anxiety associated with going to the dentist. To ease this fear, our office offers conscious sedation dentistry through either IV or oral route. This type of dentistry not only minimizes the anxiety typically associated with a visit to the dentist, but combined with advanced methods in local anesthesia, patients also enjoy a more comfortable, relaxing, and safer experience. IV/conscious sedation also allows multiple procedures to be completed during one visit. The stress and inconvenience of returning multiple times for treatments can be eliminated. This especially appeals to people who are unable to make time in their busy schedules to have complex treatments done, which would normally take several appointments.
